The evolution of mobile reporting
Good MOJO software
On my Nokia N82, the standard software from Nokia is good, but it can’t do everything i want. I’m always on the lookout for good software. A lot of people ask me what sort of software I use. This is a list of my most important software. I would also be grateful for tips on other good software.
Freeware software
Shozu
This is a beautiful peace of software for sending your videos and pictures home, directly to Flickr, Facebook or YouTube. You can manage a lot of ways to upload your videos and pictures, including FTP and mail.
‘Shozu let’s you geo-tag your material if you have a GPS on your phone and you can choose to have material automatically transferred. You can transfer via WIFI to save money or use your data carrier if cost it not an issue. Shozu supports a lot of mobile phones. The only drawback with this software is that each file can’t be bigger than 10 MB.
SIC FTP
This is another program for sending your stuff home. Sometimes I will make video files a lot bigger than 10 MB. SIC FTP can handle this. It’s also a stable FTP client.
If your not used to FTP, it can be difficult to set up, but when it’s working it’s easy and reliable. You can set up your FTP servers in advance. Some times I can even use it on the FTP server in my home network. Making it easy to transfer and receive big files wireless.
SIC FTP is made for Symbian S60v3.
Fring
Want to connect to Skype, Google Talk, MSN Messenger, ICQ, Twitter, Yahoo!, AIM & SIP contacts from anywhere? Fring actually works and be used on WIFI networks or through your mobile data carrier.
Fring is a VOIP service which combines several known VOIP services. Best of all: If you can connect through WIFI you can call for free.
I use it on my cabin where my mobile phone don’t work, but where I have broadband! With Fring I can use Skype Out to call regular networks.
On day to day basis I don’t use it so much. Guess it would be a great program for correspondent’s in every part of the world.
Shazam
Ever heard a song on a radio or a bar and wondered about what the name of the song and the band/artist is? With Shazam you can find out in seconds. I love this program! As for most program’s, the best thing is to use WIFI, but you can also use it with a mobile carrier.
The service is closed in some parts of the world. If you can’t get it to work, search for a solution. It’s not so difficult to set it up, even if your country is blocked out.
Nokia Sportstracker
I’m not really in the target group for Sportstracker, but I love til application also. It’s supposed to be used with Nokia N95 or N82 and can record different types of information about your training. Among other things it stores your geographical route and can upload pictures and videos taken on your way. The footage will be shown in a Google Map on the correct location.
This is really a perfect tool for making a different kind of report. For a MOJO this is a great way to combine footage and geographical information. The service is connected to the Sportracker web page. I wish Nokia would make it possible to embed this on other pages.
Mobile Web Server
This is another service from Nokia Betalabs. You can actually run your own web server on the mobile phone. The server runs on Phyton and offers a series of services. You got your basic blog, guest book, contact form, chat and galleries.
For MOJOs it’s possible to use it as a way letting the newsroom grab pictures and video directly from your phone. Handy if you’re busy and can’t afford spending time sending your footage home.
You can choose connecting via WIFI or your mobile carrier. As always, mobile carrier will cost you.
Mail For Exchange
My company uses Microsoft Exchange. This application allows me to receive my e-mails directly from our corporate server. It also synchronizes my contacts, calender and assignments. It even offers a corporate catalog. Since we are over three thousand employees, it is a bit difficult remembering every ones name.
pyPoziomica
This application is maybe more for fun than really useful.
Both Nokia N95 and N82 can sense movement with the accelerometer technology. This application turns your mobile phone in to a level tool.
It actually works and at one occasion, it saved a carpeting project for me.
Software you have to pay for
Salling Clicker
Since I often keep presentation in my field of work, it is handy to be able to control my laptop with the mobile phone. Salling Clicker can be set up to a lot of things. It’s actually an advanced remote for your laptop. In Power Point it also shows your note on your mobile phones screen.
There are several solutions for remote controlling laptops and desktops. I have tried several and like this one best. You do have to pay for it. That’s the only drawback. On the other hand, I have changed both phone and laptop, without having to pay for a new license.
Feel free to add useful applications to the list!
